Bilateral economic relations with Sub-Saharan Africa

According to the preliminary trade statistics for 2016, Austria's trade in goods with Sub-Saharan Africa totaled slightly less than € 1.5 bn in 2016 or 0.6 per cent of Austria's trade volume, a foreign trade dimension in 2016 comparable to that of India, ranking 24th in the list of our most important trading partners.

According to the preliminary statistical data the year 2016 proved to be difficult, showing a decrease in both exports (-9.7 percent) and imports (-13.7 percent).

South Africa remained in 2016 by far the most important export market for Austrian goods in Sub-Saharan Africa (€ 436 m), followed by Mali (€ 80 m), Nigeria (€ 68 m), Angola (€ 51 m) and Senegal (€ 38 m). 

On the other hand, regarding Austrian imports from Sub-Saharan Africa, South Africa accounted for most Austrian imports in 2016 (€ 311 m), followed by the Republic of Kongo (€ 73 m), Côte d'Ivoire (€ 51 m) Angola (€25 m) and  Ghana (€ 20 m).
